There is a laundry list of reasons why, but it boils down to an essential few. This is my third winter up here, and to be honest I've had about enough. The cold is oppressive; it latches onto your soul, sucks your vital will to live and leaves you breathless and desperate. It inhibits activity on both a mental and physical level. I've tried to get used to it, but the thoughts of what I could be doing if it were 30 degrees warmer have overcome me. My career, more than likely, will be put on hold. Summer 2012, in the books

It started with the dissolution of an engagement. It ends today, more or less, with the final scheduled charter on Weatherly  for the season. We sailed into Narragansett Bay last night after an 8 day trip to New York and Connecticut. There were 25-30 knot headwinds going there, and about the same on our stern coming home. Newport has cleared out; the kids are in school, beaches are vacant on the weekends and the tour boat numbers are dwindling. What a ride though, from arriving in Newport freshly single again back in early May, getting a quick job on Madeline , then onto an ill-fated stint with Sumurun , getting Soveraine , driving from Florida to New England, sailing Soveraine to Newport, and spending the last two and a half months on Weatherly, lots of different boats for a single season. As I said before, I'm ready for a break. Not that I'll be idle, starting this week I'm looking for a steady, and preferably indoors, job for the winter. I don't much mind ...

Frozen...in and out!

On the heels of the last post, where I mentioned that every day poses a new challenge, I awoke Wednesday morning to the discovery that my companionway hatch had completely frozen shut. I was on the inside, trying to slide it back, and it just would not budge. I slammed my fist against it to try and break it free from the billions of hydrogen bonds trapping me below, but to no avail. I escaped through the forward hatch above the v-berth, which can be seen in the background of the first picture, the foreground is the unmovable companionway hatch. The second picture is turned around 180 degrees, my view for the morning. I think that makes it worth a little inconvenience from time to time :)
